Interior Design Summer Time Special: Create a Unique, Bold Space with Black and White

Black and white is a striking colour scheme that can add dimension and excitement to any space, but it’s a little hard to use. After all, you can’t find two shades on the colour spectrum that are as far away from each other as black and white. When put together, they look sharper and bolder than when used alone, which makes decorating your home with black and white a little tricky but not impossible. If you’ve always wanted to have a black and white colour scheme in one of your rooms, follow a few simple interior design tips to make sure that you get it right.

First, decide if you want to stay subtle or if you want to create a dramatic look. Black and white themes tend to be very bold and contemporary, but you can also use the two colours in a safer way if you are not looking for a dramatic effect. Pick a few furniture pieces that are black or white or that contain a pattern featuring both colours. Accessorise them with cushions in the opposite colour. For example, decorate a white sofa with a black cushion and pair the black armchair next to it with the same cushion in white. Throw a black or white rug on the floor to add a touch of modern elegance to your black and white space.

When it comes to walls, there are several things you can do with a white and black theme. If you really want to make a drastic and daring change, paint the walls black. Use white furniture to soften the dark look. Another option is to use all white, which can be a bit too simple for a true black and white room, or use both colours together. You can paint black patterns or artwork over a white background for a beautiful, one-of-a-kind look. You can even use black letters to write out a word that means something special to you. Black and white spaces often appear cold. Doing your own wall art is a great way to make your black and white room warmer and more personal. Just remember to pick out designs that you can easily do on your own with simple painting supplies.

You can also personalise a black and white space with patterns. Cushions, rugs and curtains that feature black and white patterns are perfect for embellishing a space that has solid black or white furniture. There are countless black and white patterns you can choose from, and incorporating them into your space can really bring the whole room together.
