Create Your own Summer Style – By Pattern Clashing

You’ve heard me say it before but this interior design style is definitely not for the faint hearted! You need a little design flair and a lot of courage to make this style work in your home. Pattern clashing isn’t a new conception, it was first seen in the late 60′s and early 70′s when interiors were as colourful and daring as the clothing fashions.

Colour:
Anything goes! That’s the mantra of this interior design style, however, one thing is important and that is the use of bold colours; this style is not as effective if you use wishy washy colours!

Style:
Patterns and more patterns are what makes this unique style. There’s no room for matching curtains and sofas or bedding – each piece of furniture or soft furnishing item, from the floor to ceiling, has to have its own distinctive pattern and colour. You can opt for the latest patterns, such as large single blooms combined with chevrons, small paisley patterns and stripes to bring the look bang up-to-date or go for a more retro look by using patterns and psychedelic colours that were used in the 60′s or 70′s.

Windows:
Full length patterned curtains are ideal, alternatively a combination of one type of pattern for Roman blinds and another for the curtains. Use a different curtain fabric for the tie backs and pelmet to make your window dressing stylishly unique. This is a great way to use up any left over curtain fabrics or fabric remnants!

Floors:
The use floor rugs is a must. If you have a parquet floor then a zigzag patterned rug is an ideal choice. If you have a large floor rug lay the pattern in the opposite direction to bedding sets patterns and bedroom curtains patterns or in the lounge your sofa. Laying horizontal patterns lengthways can help to elongate a room whereas vertical patterns will give the illusion of a higher ceiling.

Accessories:
Cover a headboard with a subtly patterned fabric and use a completely different pattern and colour for super king size bedding. Old suitcases and table lamps can be transformed either by covering with fabric or paper. Chairs which all have a different colour and patterned fabric will embrace this style superbly! Don’t be shy – the more variety of colours and patterns you have the more effective the style will become.
