Black & White, Classic Combination or Scary Nightmare?

Many people are scared of using black when decorating as they think it can enclose spaces and make rooms feel smaller and darker, they are however wrong to think like this. When teamed with the right combinations it creates a classic statement and can in fact open up spaces and capture the room in a new light.

Why not theme your room around a classic black and white film such as Casablanca or It’s a Wonderful Life, after all who can forget the classic quote: ‘What do you want, Mary? Do you want the moon? If you want it, I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down for you. Hey! That’s a pretty good idea! I’ll give you the moon, Mary.’Black has classically been teamed with white to create bold patterns that cannot be ignored. When sunlight falls onto black pieces of furniture it enhances the patterns and grains beautifully, and cleverly placed lighting means the detail is not lost when the evening draws in. Bold prints can be used on sofas, rugs and cushions to emphasis them as well as enhance the colour combination.

To ensure that your room does not feel to enclosed black is traditionally used with white, neutral or light grey backgrounds. This helps to enhance the black furniture and features, while still creating a spacious feeling.

Why not team black accessories with bold colours such as reds, fuchsias or lime greens to create a striking contrast that will guarantee to grab attention when entering the room.

Oversized sofas and bold prints on wall art and large rugs help to create a classic yet sophisticated look in any house.

Although many people will still be scared of introducing black into their colour schemes, items such as lamps or light shades can add a subtle hint in an other wise neutral room, enabling you to be a bit daring but still having the option of changing it if you feel it really doesn’t work for you and your tastes.

For those of you who are ready to take the plunge but don’t want to redecorate your living room, why not introduce a black and white scheme in your dining area? A black table with white chairs, crisp white linen and pearly white porcelain teamed with black glasses and cutlery will make a bold design statement, but not one that you will have to look at constantly.

Or why not add some mystery to the bedroom, black luxury bedding with bold red accessories such as candles, lamp shades and curtains will add a sense of daring to any boudoir, as well as providing a haven for you to retreat to and curl up in.

Hopefully this has helped you to realise that black is not as scary as people may have led you to believe, and that with some creative thinking and good use of themes you can create your own take on the classic combination and hopefully the end result will please you for years to come!
